Squirrel Research

We have every hope that research into Red Squirrels will help us to reverse their decline in the UK and elsewhere.

Here we provide some basic information on current and past research.
In 2015 / 2016 RSNE has been gathering detailed monitoring information at five woodland "Ambassador sites" where regular grey squirrel management has been undertaken by RSNE Rangers.

These investigations will assess the impact of RSNE’s work in local grey squirrel populations. Fieldwork and data analysis is now complete and RSNE published the findings in 2016.

On a larger scale, team members are currently analysing several years of monitoring data from right across northern England to learn more about the factors most influential on red squirrel woodland occupancy.

Complex mathematical modelling processes are required to inform such analysis and we hope to see published findings later in 2016.
